York School of Foreign Languages can be found at 137 Hubin Lu, a prestigious location at the heart of Fuzhou’s Gulou district, overlooking West Lake.

York has a teaching staff of ten full-time, native English-speaking, foreign teachers, all of whom are qualified TESOL or CELTA trained ESL teachers, from the UK, North America or Australia. All of our teachers have been granted Foreign Expert status by the Chinese Government Education Department.

The school, which is totally self-contained, has a floor area of 1,200 square meters with ten purpose-adapted classrooms. The school also has an up-to-date and multimedia room. In addition, our fourth floor coffee bar provides comfortable surroundings for Film and Music lessons and activities. York School also has a branch at Wu Yi Square on the fifth floor of the Science Museum building.

York’s primary educational aims are to improve students’ communicative skills as quickly and efficiently as possible. We aim to do this by providing a supportive and encouraging environment for our students, by running a range of extra-curricular, culturally based activities and by using effective communicative teaching methods. All our course books and supplementary materials are supplied by famous foreign publishers, notably Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press and are designed specifically for speakers of other languages.

Before beginning studies at York School, all students are given an oral assessment by interview to determine their optimal study level. As speaking and listening skills are usually less developed in Chinese students of English, we pay special attention to the development of these skills. Our teaching methods involve pair work, group work and individual speaking and listening exercises. We encourage pro-active, communicative learning and development of cultural awareness, to provide a maximum number of opportunities to engage in speaking and listening.

York School’s programme of extra-curricular activities include Film Nights and Special Events focused on Western special occasions such as Christmas and Halloween. Because culture and language are inextricably linked, cultural awareness is an indispensable bonus in understanding how English speakers view the world and themselves.
