Nanyang is a city not only enjoying beautiful scenery and rich human culture, but also the charms fashions of ancient Han and Chu dynasties. Zhang Heng,the “Saint of Science”, Zhang Zhongjing, “the Saint of Medicine”, Fan Li, “the Saint of Business”, and the “ Saint of Wisdom”, Zhuge Liang, once here in the past, had rose to their fame.

Nan Yang Normal University (NYNU), founded in 1951, is situated on Wolong Hill, in the west of the city of Nanyang. And it is a full-time provincial　undergraduate institution of higher learning in Henan. There are 17 departments whose students are enrolled from all over China: Chinese Language and Literature, Politics and Social Management, Law, History, Foreign Languages, Economics and Management, Education, Fine Arts, Music, Sports, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Tourism and Environmental Science, Civil and Construction Engineering and other learning institutions as Adult Education College, Modern Education Technology Centre, Five-year Education Management Centre.

It has signed cooperative contracts with colleges and enterprises both at home and abroad such as Huazhong Normal University，Shanxi Normal University，Singapore East Asia Business Institute and Japan Ko Be So To Business Association. The university now is the training base for the graduate school of Chinese Agricultural Science Academy.

The university's library keeps a collection of 1.2 million books. The university offers very good facilities available to teachers and students for their study, living and recreational activities. The university has also established 22 scientific research institutes such as Zhuge Liang, the Environment and Art, the Sustainable Development Research Center, etc. including museums the Dushan Jade, the Coins, the Han-dynasty Historical Relics, the Art Exhibition and the Biological Specimen which are the academic windows characteristic of the university.

Special laboratories, a campus computer network, a number of multi-media classrooms, electronic reading-rooms, and a multifunctional auditorium constitute a good learning platform for teachers and students doing their work. The east and west campus is well laid out with novel design giving the impression of the spirit of the times and the expression of human feelings. At present, the university has a staff of over 1080 members, among whom, 270 teachers with doctor’s or master’s degree, over 300 with full or associate professor titles and 53 enjoying special subsidy of the State Council, or being leading lights of the provincial trans-century academic field, experts under the direct provincial administration and some once awarded Zeng Xianzi Prize.

The university also has employed about 10 foreign teachers. And over 100 famous specialists and scholars are offered the positions of part-time professors in the university such as President of Beijing University, Xu Zhihong, a member of Chinese Academy of Science, and other members of Chinese Academy of Science He Zuoxiu, Song Ruyong, Zhang Guowei, and Zhang Yongzhuan, Yang Xi’e, members of Chinese Academy of Engineering, including Feb. River (penname for Ling Jiefang), a popular novelist in China，President Liu Yongqing from California State University and Dr. Linda Field from RRES, England. 50 foreign teachers from 7 countries have been successively taken in and 20 teachers of the university have been sent to America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea including some European countries as visiting scholars.

For many years, the concept of education “ putting teaching first and leaning and research highest” has been carried out and the spirit of humanism of “ extensive knowledge and profound scholarship, generosity and dignity, wisdom and foresight” has been promoted by the university and steady progress has been made in teaching, academic research, management and service, campus culture and other aspects. Education quality and benefits have been step by step improved and appreciated and recognized by society. Basic Music theory and English Reading courses are selected as fine quality ones at provincial level.

In 2005, 22% of the undergraduates have been enrolled for graduate study and 95% of junior college students have been promoted to undergraduates. The rate of students’ first-time employment has reached 87%. In many national contests for college students, such as the National College Student Mathematical Conceptual Modeling, Extracurricular Learning Achievement, Art Festival, Art Show, Social Practice Activities and Henan Provincial College Student Sports Meet, it has gained many prizes. In recent years, it has undertaken 63 research projects of state or provincial level, published 210 academic works or textbooks, 2600 academic articles of which 226 are in the key journals, 21 are included in SCI and EI. 53 research programs were awarded prizes of provincial level. The national core journal of Humanities Nandu Forum and Journal of Nanyang Normal University, with their wide influence, are on the top few of the colleges and universities of the same level.

The university has been taking efforts to make it strong by scientific research, pressing ahead international cooperation education,which has resulted in two great academic features: the establishment of Han-dynasty culture research base characteristic of liberal arts. The turning point of constructing the Henan Province Humanities and Social Sciences Base has resulted in 800,000 yuan RMB, reorganizing the resources of liberal arts and having formed the academic team of Han-dynasty culture research headed by Professor Chen Jiangfeng and Liu Taixiang, Zheng Xianxing, Yang Wei as the core members. There are 4 research institutes and five auxiliary bodies under the “ Han-dynasty Culture Research centre”, including a special room for the collection of Chu- and Han-dynasty Culture, a Han-dynasty culture research website and a data base. It has accomplished quite a number of research programs of national or provincial levels, published academic books and some influential academic articles. As a result, noticeable attainments have been made in the field of Han-dynasty culture research.

In the examination and appraisal of “Henan Province Humanities and Social Sciences Key Research Base” organized by the Education Department, the centre was highly praised by the experts for its strong team academic strength, distinctive research style and obvious accomplishments. The second is the establishment of Sino-British Insect-Biology Joint Laboratory characteristic of science. With the help of research advantages of RRES, utilizing the natural resources of Baotianman, Nanyang, it is drawing their support to set up a high-start and standard Sino-British Insect-Biology Joint Laboratory.

Currently, the university has invested 6 million yuan RMB to train qualified personnel, purchase instruments and equipment and other capital construction. The agreement of cooperation has already signed setting the cooperative direction, research goal and ways of operation. Dr. Zhou Jingjiang and Kan Yunchao are chosen as the backbone of the academic team and the research project aided by the British Royal Society has been successfully applied for. The step of cooperation with RRES has taken the lead of the other institutions of higher learning of the same level in China, winning the praises of leaders of all levels and great attentions of the Chinese Science Academy and British biology circles.

Nanyang Normal University is taking effective measures to create a comprehensive and all-around school-running setup of higher level. In recent years, cooperative education programs have been reached with several foreign universities in many ways such as taking in, sending out and cooperation. A professor was sent to South Korea for Chinese language teaching, including cooperative education with universities or enterprises of Singapore, Japan and South Korea. four groups of South Korean students have come here for learning. In this way, foreign fine quality resources have been efficiently utilized to widen the field of cooperation.
