The amalgamation of the Fourth Military Medical University and the Fifth Military Medical University in 1954 brought forth the present Fourth Military Medical University. The former Fourth Military Medical University grew out of the Medical school, initially set up in 1941,under the Northwest Shanxi Military Command. The former Fifth Military Medical University developed from the Medical College of the National Central University (Nanjing). In 1959, the University was ratified by the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party as one of the 20key University in China. In 1997, was accredited as one of first university admitted into "211 project", a grand program aiming at boosting 100 key higher learning institutions to meet the challenge of the 21st century launched by the State Council of the People's Republic of China.
