Huangshan University is located in Huangshan, a picturesque city with a rich cultural background in Anhui province. Founded in 1978, it was named Huizhou Teacher's College, renamed Huangshan Junior College in December of1997, and in February of 2002 given university status and renamed Huangshan University.

At present, the University is made up of 5 schools with 6 departments offering 59 majors covering arts, history, science, pedagogy, engineering, agronomy, management, law, and many others.

Huangshan University boasts both a north and south campus with a total area of about 120 hectares. Its building area is about 300,000 square meters. The total value of the teaching equipment amounts to over 36,000,000 RMB. The University library has a collection of more than 850,000 volumes. In recent years, the University has been carrying out a rapid construction plan, which is changing the appearance of the University everyday. The facilities for teaching and research, as well as student facilities for living and recreation are constantly improving.

As part of the university’s commitment to providing high-quality education, HSU has taken great efforts to build a well-structured and qualified faculty of teachers. Among the nearly 700 teaching and administrative members, 500 of them are full-time teachers, including 160 professors and associate professors, more than 20 of them holding doctoral degrees. In addition, the University also engages long-term foreign experts and 72 part-time professors from famous universities such as Nanking University, USTC, etc.

Huangshan University currently enrolls 12,000 full-time undergraduates as well as 6,000 students in adult education programs. Students come from all over China including: Anhui, Zhejiang, Hebei, Shanxi, Yunnan, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shandong, Henan, Hunan, Hubei, Guangxi, Ningxia, etc.

Since its establishment, the University has graduated more than 20,000 students. Graduates are noted for their professionalism and their all-around competence in their selected vocational field. The employment rate of Huangshan University ranks among the highest of all colleges and universities of the same level throughout the province. In 2004, the year-end employment rate of the graduates was 94.73% and in 2005, 96.43%.

The University emphasizes an administration that employs democracy and an education that encourages wholeheartedness. HSU is home to many outstanding achievements and honors. Among them, it has been appraised as the State Advanced University, the State Advanced Unit of Spoken and Written Language Standardization, The Official Mandarin Language and Chinese Culture Dissemination Center of Anhui Province, the Provincial Advanced Unit for Excellent Grass-root Party Organization, the Provincial Advanced University and University for Promotion of Spiritual Civilization, of sports and hygiene, as well as for its high employment rate. It has also been evaluated as a Garden-like Unit and achieved Excellent status in the first provincial teaching appraisal.
