Maoming University is situated in the southern seaside city, Maoming Municipality, Guangdong Province. Comrade Jaing Ze-min came to Maoming twice for inspection and wrote inscription: “Building Maoming into a beautiful modern seaside city.” Maoming is the biggest petro-chemical production base in South China as well as the largest fruits producer in China. Maoming University is developing very rapidly on this beautiful and fertile land.

In March, 2000, Maoming University was founded, on the basis of the former Guangdong Petrochemical College and Maoming Education College. Maoming University belongs to Guangdong Province under the joint management of province and the municipality but mostly the province supervises the university.

In over 50 years, totally, the university has brought up over 40,000 graduates for the country. They are working in all the petrochemical enterprises in China as well as in schools at all levels in West Guangdong. Being technical and teaching backbones, they are very popular in their work.

At present, the university consists of 6 secondary colleges: College of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering, College of Chemistry and Life Science, Mechanical and Electrical College, College of Computer and Electronic Information, Normal College, College of Adult Education, as well as 5 departments directly under the university: Department of Economic Management, Department of Architectural Engineering, Department of Social Science, Department of Physical Education, and Art Department. They cover 7 disciplines, such as engineering, science, management, education, literature, law, history, etc. and 31 undergraduate specialties. The university enrolls students from 16 provinces (central municipalities and regions). Up to the end of June, 2006, the university possessed 9382 full time students. In 2004 and 2005, the employment rates of the graduates were respectively 97.6% and 96.8%.

The library contains 971,200 books and 11 kinds of internet databanks. There are 12 experimental teaching centers and 22 laboratories. Among them, the Laboratory of Modern Telecommunications is the provincial key opening laboratory. The university information network center is one of the regional centers for education and research in Guangdong Province. The campus network has almost covered all the areas for teaching and management. “The construction of digital campus” has taken effect initially.

At present, the university has 1083 staffs. Among 537 teachers, there are 40 full professors, 172 associate professors. Teachers of advanced professional titles make up 39.48% and 207 teachers have degrees of masters and PhDs, making up 38.55% of the total number of teachers. 2 teachers have entered the “Thousand, Hundred and Ten Projects” in Guangdong higher learning institutions. The university has fostered 18 academic leaders. Since 2003, 2 teacher has been chosen as the national advanced workers and national excellent teachers, 16 teachers have won the glorious titles such as Rising Star of Teaching in South Guangdong, Excellent Teachers in South Guangdong, Excellent Educators in Province and City, as well as Labor Models, etc..

At present, the university has undertaken 35 research projects at both the national and provincial levels, and 60 research projects for cities and local enterprises. Research funds are 8.669 million yuan. The university had obtained 24 patents. These research results have been partly applied to production, which contribute a lot to the local economy and social development. The university has brought up 21 research students for master degree programs jointly with Taiyuan University of Science and Technology, ?Nanjing University of Information Engineering, Geological University of China, Wuhan University of Science and Technology, South China University of Tropical Agriculture, etc., which promotes the development of research at university.

With the improvement of the management level, the university pays great attention to the communications and cooperation with foreign universities with each passing day and has won initial achievements. At present, Maoming University has set up comprehensive partnership with Staffordshire University, Britain, and the cooperation will include teachers’ training, academic exchange, mutual visits of scholars, and exchanges of teachers and students.
