English schools in China

Fujian - Fuzhou
School:Fuzhou-Napier College

FNC English Programme: This course provides the groundwork in English necessary for the students to continue with their second and third year professional studies. It also allows them to develop their English skills for future study overseas, and will open up very positive job opportunities within China for those with confidence and competency in both written and spoken English. The students will have a definite advantage over graduates from the traditional Chinese educational system because of the practical focus of the English learning in this course. There is a balance in the English teaching between speaking, listening, reading and writing which covers general English and then becomes more specific and focused on academic and professional English. The course syllabus is carefully designed to ensure that there is a logical progression in the development of the students’ language skills, and increasing intellectual challenge throughout the year, aimed specifically at preparing the students for the second year of their diploma.

Our achievements: The purpose of the College is not essentially to teach English for examinations but to enable them to communicate effectively in the English language and to be able continue their studies efficiently in second and third years. Nevertheless, by January 2004, fifty percent of the 2003 year entry students had achieved an IELTS level of 5.0 and 80 percent of the 2002 students had reached this level. Over fifty percent of the 2002 year entry students have reached IELTS 6.0.

Associate Institutions:

Fuzhou University: Twenty one students who graduated from the College in 2003 transferred to Fuzhou University to continue studies for a degree. About fifty will transfer in 2004.

University of Ballarat: FNC has an articulation agreement with UB that permits Diploma graduates to enter at third year level in business studies and gives one and a half years credit for Computer studies. Fourteen Diploma 2003 graduates progressed to University of Ballarat to pursue third year studies for Degrees in Management and Computer studies. They should graduate in 2005. A further twenty two have gained provisional acceptance for third year studies starting in July 2004.

Leicester University: Diploma graduates enter the Management Centre and the Department of Computer Science the at second year level for a two years course leading to an honours degree. Four students are in their second year at the university. Two FNC teachers have completed Masters degrees.
