Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP), Chinese Academy of Sciences was reorganized from Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics, and Changchun Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in July, 1999.

Along the thought of innovation both on fundamental research and high-tech, the institute has established itself as a multidiscipline comprehensive institute engaged in basic research, applied basic research, engineering technology research and high-tech industrialization.

Under the leadership of Academician and Prof. Wang Daheng, Xu Xurong and a number of scientists, the institute has made tremendous contributions to the progress of science, technology, economic development, and national defense with more than 1400 achievements in applied optics, luminescence, fine mechanics and optical engineering, including the successful development of China's first ruby laser and the first large-scale cinethodolite.

In the past half century, CIOMP has also trained and transferred over 2200 high quality scientists, engineers, and technicians to other institutions. It is therefore known as an optical cradle in China.

Now, CIOMP is the largest institute of CAS. It employs 2461 staffs, including 3 Academicians, 118 professors, and 316 associate professors.

As one of the important base of doctor degree courses, the education department of CIOMP has 4 and 9 courses of doctor and master degree vespeetively for training doctors.

Now it has 4 centers for doctor degree study, 9 centers for master degree study, and 3 post-doctoral research stations.

The present enrollment totals about 310, including 180 doctors. 28 postdoctoral researchers are currently working here.

CIOMP is the first qualified unit by the ISO-9001 Quality Committee, and is one of the national first-class archive management units conferred by CAS. It not only edits and publishes many kinds of scientific periodicals, such as, Optics, Fine Engineering, Journal of Luminescence, LC and Display, but also establishes the Chinese Optics Document Abstract Database, which is the only one in optical field in China.

The institute mainly specialized in the basic science research, applied basic research and engineering technology research, which form a complete science research system. The Key Lab of Excited State Processes of CAS has advantages in the field of luminescence in RE ions, luminescence of wide gap II-VI group semiconductor, microcavity laser, Organic and inorganic films of electroluminescence.

The State Key Lab of Applied Optics focuses on luminescence, short wavelength optics, space optics and related fields, and has achieved many well-known and innovative achievements with extensive applications. The Space Optics Research Department, the National Test & Supervision Center of Optical and Mechanical Products, and Jilin CAD Engineering Technology Center mainly undertake tasks of national major S&T projects. Many large-scale photoelectric systems and technology equipment with advanced world standard have been supplied to meet the needs of the state. In recent years, CIOMP has made rapid progress in developing high-tech industry. Changchun Photoelectric Industrial Park of Chinese Academy of Sciences, which has an area of 2.12 square kilometers, is now under construction.
