Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology (BIPT), a former high engineering school subject to SINOPEC Group，was founded in 1978. In 1999 it passed the assessment of qualification for teaching work by Ministry of Education successfully.

The institute is constituted of six faculties and three departments of basic courses. The faculties are Faculty of Material and Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Information Engineering, Faculty of Economic Administration, Faculty of humanities and Social Science and Faculty of Adult Education.

And the four departments are Department of Mathematics and Physics, Department of Foreign Languages and Department of Physical Education.

Now in the institute here are 20 specialties, such as chemical engineering and techniques, mechanical design and manufacture and its automation, computer science and technology, international economy and trade, etc., of which four are priority ones, chemical techniques, mechanical electronic engineering, technical economy and management, and applicable computer technology. Otherwise, the institute possesses two bases, one for talent training, and the other for production-teaching-research combination.

BIPT has the enrollment of students from 28 provinces or municipalities of China.

BIPT are promoting graduate program at speed and developing adult education and community education moderately while laying emphasis on undergraduate training.

Presently there are altogether over 7,000 students, including 6,000 undergraduates, 80 candidates for Master or Dr. Degrees, 1100 adult students and 20 overseas students. BIPT is now developing into a comprehensive university covering multiple disciplines and educational levels at a breathtaking pace.

BIPT, with a group of devoted and highly-qualified scholars and young talents, has a staff of over 700, of whom 43% are professors and associate professors, 6.5% with Dr degree or as post doctorate; 55.6% with Master degree. In addition, some CAS academicians from petrol-chemical industries have been invited as pluralistic professors.
