Medical required for 6 month contract?

Hi - We've been told a medical certificate/exam is not required for contracts in China for 6 months or less. What are people's experiences with this?

If we choose to stay on, how about getting a medical in China? Or would we just be better off getting one before we go? Any thoughts?
