Mount Wutai, a Peaceful World to Purify the Soul
By:BoBo Wang

Mount Wutai, the most famous Buddhist spot, is located in the northeast of Shanxi province, China. Wutai means “five terraces”, as its five peaks grow like five large columns standing straightly with the tops flat like terraces. As the temperature here is cool in summer, Wutai Mountain got another name – Qingliangshan Mountain “Cool Mountain”.

As a famous Buddhist resort, Mount Wutai is the Bodhimanda of Manjusri. Due to its majesty and long history, Mt. Wutai tops among China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains. Mt. Wutai is with remarkable reputation not only in China, but also out of China including Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Nepal, etc. For the past many years, dozens of temples were constructed around the mountains with the first one built in Han Dynasty. As the Manjusri faith became popular during the Tang Dynasty, 360 temples were once built here. During the Qing Dynasty, with the flow of Lamaism in Mount Wutai, two distinctive kinds of temples appeared in blue or yellow.

The region inside the five terraces is called “Tainei” while outside called “Taiwai”. Today, there are altogether 43 temples existing in Wutai Mountain with 37 in Tainei and 6 in Taiwai. Most of the Buddhist temples gather in Taihuai town of Tainei where temples spread every corner of the town, standing row upon row. Xiantong Temple, Tayuan Temple, Shuxiang Temple, Luo Temple and Pusading Temple are the most well-known one. Temples in Taiwai are more scattered with Nanchan Temple and Foguang Temple being the most famous ones. As Mount Wutai is the Bodhimanda of Manjusri, temples here all worship Manjusri in the Main Halls.

Except for the great value in culture, Mt. Wutai also has remarkable sceneries. On the East Peak, you can watch the sunrise and the sea of clouds. On the West Peak, you can admire the moon at night. On the North Peak, you can view the beautiful snowscape in winter and South Peak is where you can watch clusters of luxuriant flowers. In addition, Middle Peak is the best place to view the astronomical phenomena.

In 1982, Mt. Wutai was declared as National Forest Park and in 2001, and it was approved as one of the First National AAAA Level Tourist Attractions in China. On the 33rd world heritage convention, which was held on June 26, 2009 in Seville, Spain, Mt Wutai was officially named World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
