Suzhou, a 2,500 year old city located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze and on the shores of Lake Taihu is the cradle of Wu culture which originated during the Shang Dynasty in China in 11th century BC. One of the most beautiful cities of China known for its natural landscape and unique charm, Suzhou is referred to as The Venice of Orient because of its innumerable canals. * The geographical area of Suzhou comprises of 10% cultivated fields, 30% hills, and the rest is covered by canals.
* The city is truly defined by its dozens of beautiful gardens, whose beauty is enhanced with unique architecture, elegant bridges, and mesmerizing greenery. These gardens emanate serenity and tranquility which can be rarely experienced anywhere else in the world.
* For a few years around 403-221 BC Suzhou was the capital of the state of Wu. The name "Wu” is derived from the local tribes, who called themselves "Gou Wu" during the 11th century BC reign of the Shang Dynasty.
* It is recognized since the olden times as the most aspiring and prosperous city of in the south-eastern coast of China, and a significant metropolis of industry and commerce.
* In the early sixth century the city flourished as a trading and silk center. To this day, there are numerous silk factories in the area.
* Suzhou is located almost directly west of Shanghai and can be reached from Shanghai by air or by water by means of the "Da Yunhe" or the "Grand Canal of China", which is the oldest and the longest canal in the world.
* The tone of Wu dialect is known to reflect softness, tenderness, serenity, and elegance.

Although traditionally Suzhou was not one of the major stops on most China tours, lately it has made its presence felt across the globe due to its picturesque landscape and is fast becoming one of the "must see" cities in China.
