Travel, Teach, Live in China

Renting a Bicycle in China

Traveling by bicycle is a very popular means of transportation throughout China. China has a huge population, and it is estimated that there is at least one bicycle for every two people within the company. Bicycles are used in the cities in order to get around town efficiently and economically. They are also used as a basic means of transportation in rural areas. In fact, in some areas a bicycle may be the most common form of transportation. Bicycles are uniquely suited to some of the more rural areas of the country, where small winding paths are more common than wide roads. Of course, many people in China ride bicycles purely for sport or exercise, but it's also a much more commonly accepted means of everyday transportation, as compared to countries such as the United States.

Buy or Rent?

If you are living for an extended period of time in China, chances are you will want to purchase your own bicycle so that you can use it whenever you want for transportation or just for the enjoyment of riding. Even if you don't use a bicycle for everyday transportation, owning one can be a great way of enjoying some of the trails in the rural areas, just for fun. However, if you are just visiting China, renting a bicycle can be a more convenient and economical option. There are many bike rental establishments throughout China, especially in some of the larger cities. For example, if you are visiting Beijing, you will have no problems finding a variety of bicycle rental establishments. You can even find companies that offer guided bicycle tours, which can be a lot of fun while being a good way to see the sights.

Choosing the Correct Bicycle

Whether you are planning to purchase or rent a bicycle, it is important to choose the correct one for your specific use. You'll find that in China, the one-speed commuter style of bicycle is extremely popular. These bicycles are great if you want to ride around in the city to see the sights. They are quite comfortable and easy to ride. These bicycles are very economical to rent, and you can often rent a bicycle for an entire day for around $15. If you rent the bicycle for more than one day, you can get an even better price. If you plan to ride primarily in the city, a one-speed bicycle would be an excellent choice. However, if you wish to ride on some of the rural paths, or if you plan to ride for longer distances, a mountain bike style would be a better option. These have multiple speeds, which will make negotiating hills much easier. They are also great for different kinds of road surfaces, providing for a safer ride. Mountain bikes are generally more expensive to rent, but can still be an excellent deal. If you are planning a lengthy ride or have a desire to tour and still be able to carry packages with you, then a touring bike would be the best choice. These are generally the most expensive to rent, but are extremely handy for carrying packages and even some of your luggage along with you. Whichever style you choose, you're sure to have a great time.
