Travel, Teach, Live in China

My wife and I taught at CAS in 2004. Living in Zhaoqing and teaching at CAS (Canadian American School) was a pleasure. In fact Zhaoqing was voted the top tourist city in China a few years ago and has some great natural attractions.

Apart from having better than average facilities like a large gym and olympic size pool, the school is situated at the foot of the mountains overlooking the city. The apartments are a little small but we have TV with English channels and a computer with internet access. The food provided at the school is cheap and quite reasonable by western standards.

The salary and conditions are about average, although having students from wealthy families does make teaching a challenge at times. Having had classes of 60 in a government school however, we have been pleased to have class sizes of 20 or less at CAS.

A big advantage here is that there are about 6-8 foreign teachers on staff so plenty of opportunities to share experiences and travel together. The school took us and the senior students to Shenzhen "Happy Valley" theme park for an outing. Excursions are very much part of the curricula. Overall, I would have no problem recommending this school to any prospective teacher, as the school is always seeking quality staff for the coming semester.
