I recently remembered a documentary I saw on tv a while back about DNA testing. The reporter, a caucasian American, had his own DNA tested and was given the results near the end of the program. He was quite surprised to discover that the test revealed something like 15% blood ties with the Chinese people. Many white Americans would be shocked if they knew how many of us have blood ties to African Americans. Personally, I could care less. I don't care if we're all purple. It's all rather silly isn't it?
No, I'm not a marriage counselor Mat, but thanks for the question. I have had a lot of training in communication though. I think though that the education I've received has only added to beliefs that were fostered and nourished when I was young. I was fortunate to grow up in a family that disdained the judging of others based on skin color or religion.
On a final note, it's true that cultural differences can create some marriage problems. But the willingness to communicate about those issues usually paves the way toward a successful marriage. I'm a white guy who has been with the same Chinese girl for over two years now. Eventually we'll get married. Sure, we've had some problems - usually culturally based, but we've found it pretty easy to get past those problems by employing open and honest communication. I think it was Emerson that said, "To know in your heart that what is true for you is true for all mankind is genius." Well, I'm certainly not a genius - but I do realize that we're all basically cut from the same cloth.
