Travel, Teach, Live in China

Tips for Women Traveling Alone in China

If you're a woman traveling alone, you're probably all too familiar with the risks and situations you often need to plan for. In some countries, these risks can sometimes be a bit formidable for the woman traveling on her own. Fortunately, this is not the case when planning a trip to China. In fact, China is a very easy country to visit for the woman traveling alone. If you're planning a trip to China, whether for a short visit or an extended stay, here are some travel tips to keep in mind. Remember, as is the case with all your travels, you'll find your trip to China will be much more enjoyable and less hectic if you take the time to plan ahead.

Plenty of People

The abundance of people you'll find in China is one of the reasons why you'll probably feel quite comfortable traveling to China alone. It will seem as though you're always surrounded by big crowds of people, no matter where you go within the country. Even when visiting rural locations, there are generally plenty of people around to put your mind at ease. This fact alone is one of the primary reasons why China is a great place to visit if you're a woman traveling on your own.

Prudent Safety Precautions

Although China is basically a safe country in which to travel, it's always a good idea to pay attention to basic safety precautions. When traveling in China, it's likely that you'll arrive with maps you've printed online, or perhaps those that you've gathered during your travels. Although these maps will be a big help, keep in mind that China is a rapidly growing country, and that things are constantly changing. As such, you might just find that the map you've been depending upon is woefully out of date. When this happens, the locals are a great source of information. By simply being friendly to the locals that you meet, they will probably be more than happy to help you out and give you directions when needed.

When getting directions from others, it's a good idea to get the address written down in Chinese characters. Not only is this one of the best way of getting accurate information from the locals, but it will also be the best way of receiving more assistance along the way to your destination. By having the address written down in Chinese characters, you'll be able to show it to merchants, taxi drivers and others. You won't have to worry about pronouncing the words incorrectly, and you'll have a far better chance of actually getting where you want to go.

If you're planning to travel on an overnight train, it's best to try to get a top bunk. You'll be a bit more out of the way on a top bunk, so you'll have more privacy. As an added bonus, you'll also have the peace of mind of knowing that it will be more difficult for somebody to steal your belongings while you sleep. You'll also find that top bunks are a bit less expensive.

One of the best ways to be safe while traveling in China is to just be friendly. By doing so, you'll make plenty of friends… and even the strangers you meet will be happy to help you along the way.
