Travel, Teach, Live in China

GOOD teaching programs in China?

China is a great option for first time teachers, BA candidates and non-BA candidates alike. It has a rich cultural backdrop and offers a variety of teaching possibilities.

Completing one experience in China would be beneficial for pursuing other positions elsewhere in the future. Just because you have no previous teaching experience doesn't mean you should settle for the least appealing option. While there are some recruiters teachers should be wary of, there are also plenty of good recruiters that can place teachers in reputable public or private schools.

Contracts typically include a reasonable salary (generous in light of the low cost of living), accommodations and partial assistance toward flights (at end of contract).

Caution is always prudent. A number of fraudulent teaching opportunities appear on various job boards. Some are well camouflaged and have drawn teachers in.

Please be advised that if a contract sounds too good to be true, it likely is. NEVER send money to a school in advance as there is no reason for them to require this. If you are concerned about a particular school or company, you could contact the country’s local embassy/consulate. I also recommend that you ask the director for contact information for 2-3 current foreign teachers currently at the school from whom you can get a reference. Some questions you may want to ask the teacher(s) are:

1. Are you always paid on time?
2. Does the employer abide by the requirements set out in the contract?
3. Does the employer provide transportation from the airport?
4. What are the conditions of your accommodations?
5. Is there any in-class support?
6. Is there a structured curriculum?
7. What is the average class size?
8. Is the contact with your employer adequate?
9. Is there any other information you would like to tell us about your experience?

Enjoy your teaching adventure, wherever it may take you!
