Visiting Taupo And Cambridge In The Waikato Region Of New Zealand
By:Raoul

Taupo
Taupo, a town on the shore of Lake Taupo in the middle of New Zealand's North Island, is within the southern Waikato area and has a population of 23,000. Taupo is located at the outlet of Lake Taupo which is New Zealand's largest lake, forming the Waikato river. The river then flows over one of New Zealand's most stunning waterfalls, the Huka Falls, which can be viewed just north of the town.

Taupo is also a centre of volcanic and geothermal activity. There are Hot springs suitable for bathing at several places in the Taupo area, while the volcanic mountain Tauhara lies 6 kilometres (4 mi) to the east. Taupo is pronounced toe-paw in Maori, the language of New Zealand's original pacific inhabitants. The name Taupo comes from Taupo-nui-a-Tia, which translated literally means "The great cloak of Tia" as in legend, the lake's discoverer was Tia.
Taupo is a buzzing tourist centre - especially in summer, as it offers it's panoramic views over the lake to the volcanic mountains of Tongariro National Park to the south.

Since the mid-1990s Taupo has become increasingly popular as a venue for major sporting events, increasingly of an international nature. Some of the major events in Taupo include A1 Grand Prix,World Water Ski Racing Championships, Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, Great Lake Relay, Levene Half Marathon and the Maxxis FIM International Six Day Enduro.
