How to Travel Around Australia
By:Collaborator

You may have always dreamed of traveling around Australia, but once you get there, you'll realize what a daunting task is ahead of you. Australia may be a big country, but there are several options available to get around. Now the biggest issue is figuring out where to go!

Rent a car. One of the easiest options to get you on your way is to rent a car. The same rental companies that are available back home are also available in Australia, so you can rely on the familiar names like Hertz, Avis and Budget along with a few native companies that are just as reliable.

Walking is always an option in the larger cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. If you're there for a city-intensive visit, and have found a great hotel in the center of it all, don't be afraid to get a little exercise by hoofing it around town.

Use the public transportation. Buses are available in all the larger cities throughout Australia. Just remember that each state and territory is run by a different local government, so each system will be different. Explore your public transport travel options in the area you'll be visiting by following the links at the official Australia website (see Resources below).

Take advantage of the tram services. Australia has spent millions of dollars upgrading and extending its tram services throughout the country. In some places you can get an all-day pass for just $6, so take a look at the metro transport systems in cities like Sydney (see Resources below).

Get romantic and take an old-fashioned train ride. The Great Southern Railway has beautiful passenger cars that take you to all corners of the continent (see Resources below). Book a tour, or just take a scenic ride for your travel across Australia.

Take the bus. Greyhound as well as several other Australian bus lines run throughout the continent. Explore all of your options at Transportation in Australia website (see Resources below).
