Entertaining Elementary Kids
By:Geoffrey Wagner

If you want a challenge, offer to host a party or a simple afternoon of play for a group of elementary kids. It may seem simple enough, especially if you have your own, but this is something that is not for the faint of heart. If you are not attentive and do not keep them engaged and busy, very bad things can happen. Children are full of life, imagination, and a bit of mischief. As you may realize, those things do not always come together with a good outcome. Have a plan in place to make sure the day goes well.

You can take a few clues from your local school when it comes to keeping elementary kids entertained, happy, and out of trouble. The school day is set to a very rigorous schedule that makes time for all kids while moving things along. That means when you have elementary kids coming over, you have to have a plan in your mind. Along with this plan you have to have everything you need ready and waiting. If you are going to have water balloon fights, for example, you want to have a good supply on hand. Get more than you think you need so you don't run out too soon.

Structure is probably the only thing that keeps elementary kids in line at school, or at least some would say. This another part of the equation that helps though. Children are taught right from the start that they are to respect and listen to their teachers. When you have a group of elementary kids together, you have to talk to them just a moment, before anything else starts, to let them know the rules of your house and that you expect them to behave and listen to the adults. For the most part, this works very well. There are always going to be some kids that act up, but most are going to be okay?so long as they are busy.

What you choose to keep those elementary kids busy is up to you. If you are having a party, you probably already have a lot of things planned. Just keep things moving. If you see some kids acting up, it might be time to move on to the next thing. If you are not having a party, you almost want to plan the day or afternoon as if that is what you are doing. Have things lined up and ready to go so that you can move them along to something new if they appear to be bored or something you chose does not seem to be of interest for as long as you thought.

Don't forget to feed elementary kids. Even if they have just had a meal, offer a snack within a few hours. Kids get hungry fast, and nothing sets them to getting into trouble quicker than an empty, growling stomach. Make sure they have snacks when needed, and also something to drink when they need it. Children behave better when they are fed. Remember to eat too, and to have some patience. If you go into it thinking calm thoughts, you are far less likely to get upset. They are just kids, so enjoy the fun with them.
