ESL Teaching - Tips For Developing Students' Listening Skills
By:Peter Callig

Listening to English helps students improve their language skills. This article offers some tips to teachers for developing their students listening skills.

The more students learn to listen the more they can begin to construct meaning and make sense of the words that they hear. Listening to the language helps them to get used to its sounds, rhythm and intonation. This prepares them for using the language themselves.

There are many opportunities for the students to listen. Giving instructions, organizing classroom activities, giving praise and encouragement are just a few examples. The more classroom talk a teacher can give the students the better. Their understanding of the language will expand.

What are they ways a teacher can develop their students listening skills?

1) Storytelling - Try and spend some time everyday reading a story to the students. Have them sit down and listen quietly. Afterwards you can question them about the story, giving them an opportunity to practice their speaking skills too.

2) Games - Students love playing games and it is a great way to nurture their interest and encourage them to listen to the language.

3) Rhymes - Children enjoy listening to rhythmic word patterns. Listening to rhyming words gets them familiar with the language's intonation and rhythm.

4) Chants - Listening to and repeating chants increases the students exposure to the language and its sounds.

5) Songs - Students should be encouraged to listen to songs in the language they are learning. The teacher can create worksheets around songs which quiz the students about what they hear when they listen to the songs. Students have to listen out for words and try to decipher the meaning of the song.

6) Dictations - Students listen and write what they hear. This exercise can improve both writing and listening skills.
