Program Objective
This program offers an intensive language immersion experience for students who wish to improve their communication for professional, academic or personal development. A range of class levels, from Upper Beginner to Advanced allow participants to build on their progress in previous sessions and offer a path to admission to the University of Victoria through the University Admission Preparation Program.

Instruction Levels
The ELPI 12-Week Intensive Program offers six levels of instruction from Upper Beginner to University Admission Preparation. We give you a written and speaking test before the start of classes to place you in the correct level.

Upper Beginner to Low Intermediate-level programs build on your communication skills. They focus on comprehension and speaking confidence by improving your pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.

At the Intermediate and Advanced levels, you can choose either a general or an academic program, depending on your needs. The general program is excellent for professional or personal development. The academic program is for students who plan to attend an English-speaking college or university.

The University Admission Preparation level (UAP) is the most advanced level in the ELPI program. Successful completion of this program satisfies the English requirement for admission to University of Victoria degree programs.

The General Advanced Level (GAP) is also offered to advanced students who want to strengthen their proficiency in English for international communication. This level focuses on career, business, global issues and individual interests. Participants volunteer for a minimum of 2 hours per week in the community.

Learning Resources
Study Centre and Pronunciation Clinic
Available to all students enrolled in the 12-Week Program. Students can meet English-speaking volunteers for conversation and help with homework. The Study Centre also has a library of English videotapes, magazines, and books for you to use during your spare time.

Computer-Assisted Language Laboratory (CALL Facility)
A drop-in computing lab available for all students studying languages at UVic. This modern facility is equipped with a large library of audio-visual materials and students are encouraged to visit often outside of class to improve their English comprehension skills. This facility is open 7 days a week.

Library
ELC students receive a UVic student card at the beginning of their program which gives them full borrowing privileges for all book and audio-visual materials in the main library.

Computer Labs
There are 4 computer labs available throughout UVic’s campus. ELC students have unlimited access to these computer labs for email, to work on projects, etc.

Program Evaluation
Formal examinations are held each session and a report card is issued at the end of the session. The final mark is the total of all assignments. After completing each level, students receive a Certificate of Participation. These certificates do not constitute credit for the University of Victoria and do not guarantee admission to the University.
