CENTER FOR ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
MISSION
The Center for English as a Second Language prepares ESL students for success in an American university classroom, offers English language instruction for those needing greater English proficiency for personal or career-related purposes, and provides continued English language support for those international students currently enrolled at Brescia University.
GOALS
To improve the students' English language and critical thinking skills in the major areas of speaking, listening, reading, writing, research, and test-taking.
To familiarize the students with American culture and American universities' general academic standards, policies, and instructional strategies (such as group and peer work.)
To familiarize the students with different styles of text found in an academic environment.
To integrate the students in the program with the university and community and promote cross-cultural awareness.
To foster a supportive learning environment in which the students feel comfortable communicating in English.
To prepare the students to become active participants in improving their English language skills.
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
Non-native English speakers need to take the TOEFL if:
You completed your secondary education outside the United States
You completed high school in the United States but did not meet the requirements for regular admission
You are a transfer student from a regionally accredited academic institution and have not earned transfer credits for an English Grammar and Composition course
The TOEFL is given several times throughout the year both in the Unites States and in many countries.
